Reflecting on the Research Project Experience

Jaymie, Mindy and I had been working on the research project for the past few weeks and in a few days’ time the research project will be completed. We started the project by brainstorming on the topic, then went on to gather data and ended by writing a survey report.

There are a few learning points learnt during the course of doing the project. Firstly, effective communication plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth flowing of the project. It facilitates the transmittance of the messages, ensuring that the information gets across to the other project members clearly and not misunderstood. Secondly, team work helps to increase the efficiency of the research project. Dividing the work among us and completing the allocated work and adhering to the agreed deadline will aid in making the project more smooth flowing. Thirdly, I have learnt how to build on interpersonal relationships. As we did not know each other prior to this project, we took some time to get to know each other better. We have to be able to understand and accept one another’s differences, be it in personality or viewpoint. We should show respect to others by allowing them to present their viewpoints, no matter how unfeasible it may be. Lastly, the writing of the final formal report has allowed me to hone my writing skills, which I must admit that it is getting a little rusty.

Active listening and effective oral communication are some of the skills which I can continue to practice in the upcoming oral presentation. These areas of communication will definitely come in handy during the preparation of the oral presentation. One weakness which I think I need to improve on is written communication. I will need to improve on how to write clear, concise reports, and free of grammatical mistakes.

Overall, the research project was an enriching experience.

Hi Xue Xin,

I agree with you on that adhering to agreed deadlines allows the smooth completion of the project. Upon unanimous agreement, it is only fair that everyone completes their share of work on time as everyone has equally heavy commitments. Not leaving things to the eleventh hour would also reduce stress and conflict within the group. For that, your group deserves a thumbs-up for the high efficiency!

I also agree that it is important to show respect to fellow group members by allowing them to present their viewpoints. This is not only respect, but also a chance for us to practise active listening. Should we fail to listen actively, we may miss out on valuable contributions to the project or a chance to get to know our fellow group members better.

All in all, it sounds like you had a great time doing the project. All the best for the upcoming presentation!

Cheers,
Xueli

Same here! My writing skills was also getting a little “mouldy” due to a lack of practice. This project certainly has given us an opportunity to improve on our writing skills. I agree that it is important to adapt to different teammates’ personality and viewpoints. It is often because of these differences that help a group come up with different and creative ideas during brainstorming. This would help to get things done faster. Dividing the work among teammates can indeed save a lot of time and also lessen individuals’ workload. Apart from that, you have also brought up a very good point about showing of respect to others by listening to their suggestion, no matter how unfeasible it may be. Even a simple gesture of listening can help establish a good working relationship with teammates.

All the best for your next team project!

Hi Xue Xin!

I agree with you that effective communication is important in doing project. It can prevent any miscommunication or misinterpretation which can result in delay. It certainly improves efficiency.

Building interpersonal relationship is also crucial in making the project work a success. It is good that your group has been open-minded and adaptable to others' opinions and ideas. This is part of building interpersonal relationship. Moreover, everyone in the group do not know each other initially. Hence, it is indeed important to be open-minded.

Good luck for the upcoming oral presentation!

Elaine

Thanks, Xue Xin, for sharing with us your "learning points" from doing the research project. Am glad that you have benefited from your "enriching experience".

Do be careful of your choice of tenses eg. in the second paragraph. Three tenses - the present, past and perfect tenses - are used and sometimes the wrong tense is used in the sentence.
